Dr.
Daniel Desrivieres, a Haitian-American, graduated Cum Laude in
1981 from Upsala College in East Orange, New Jersey, with a
Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and French.
He received another Bachelor of Science degree in Biology
and Vision science from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in
1984.
He received his doctorate degree in optometry from the
Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 1987.
He
was president of Essex County Optometric society in 1994-1995.
The County Society received the Optometric Society of the
Year form the New Jersey Optometric Association while her was
president.
Dr.
Desrivieres served on the East Orange Board of Health from 1992
to 1996, and Board of Education form 1994 to 2000.
He was a member of the Maintenance Committee, District
Review Council, Policy Committee, Legislative Chairman, and
Sunshine Commitee. He represented the East Orange Board of
Education at the Essex County Educational Services Commission.
In the interest of multiculturalism, he successfully led
the renaming of the former Nassau School in East, Orange, NJ
after Toussaint Louverture, a great Haitian General Considered
by many to be the man of the millennium.
As
a president and vice president of the Essex county Education
Services commission, he and other members of the board were
instrumental in the creation of Sojourn High School at the Essex
County Correctional Facility.
One of the goals of this school is to provide
incarcerated youths with a high school diploma.
Another school that was created is the Essex Campus
Academy in Orange, New Jersey.
The Academy provides a unique learning environment for
students with special behavioral, social, and educational
needs.
As
policy Committee Chairman, he and other members of the committee
reviewed all the policies that governed the East Orange School
District as required by law.
He developed policies for the utilization of the Internet
by students and staff, Zero Tolerance, Emergency preparedness,
ect.
As
a chairman of the Finance Committee, Dr. Desrivieres and other
members of the committee increased compliance with the
submission of lunch applications from all the schools to almost
100%. This move saved the East Orange School District about five
hundred thousand dollars per year.
He facilitated communication between the food service
vendor of record and the students. The students for the first
time had direct input or the type of quality of food that they
were served. He
also ensured that a purchasing manual was developed that would
formalize the East Orange School Districts financial
transactions.
Dr.
Desrivieres received the Optometrist of the Year Award from the
National Optometric Association in 2000.
He is a regular presenter on the All-Creole radio show
Echo Creole on Radio Tropicale.
He has published several scientific papers, served as an
examiner in optometry, and lectured to other professionals on
various subjects on the visual system.
Dr.
Danield Desriviers is an experienced, dedicated and committed
former candidate for the office of Assembly for the 34th
Legislative District. He
has resided in East Orange since 1997.
He and his wife Debbie are proud parents of three fine
boys.
