Diabetes Mellitus is a common problem that affects 10% of the American population. It causes numerous severe conditions such as blindness, heart failure, dialysis-requiring kidney failure, limb amputation, etc.

The level of sugar (glucose) in the blood is controlled by insulin and other circulating molecules. Insulin facilitates the uptake of he sugar by the cells.

In diabetes mellitus, insulin levels may be too low to achieve its usual function. At times, the level is normal, but the cells cease to respond to insulin. In both scenarios, blood sugar level increases. High blood sugar levels bring on complications.

A person with diabetes must adhere to a strict diet and a firm medication regimen that controls the blood sugar. An active lifestyle, along with a daily exercise routine, is also recommended. This treatment is demanding. Any slip-up can be costly.
